It's 4.00pm at work. Lunch was a long time ago and dinner feels even longer away. An email pops up in front of you - Carol from HR has her birthday today and bought a cake for everyone to share...Danger! Just the one bit of cake won't be too bad, will it?

What to do: Whenever you are feeling hungry there are a few little tricks you can use to see if you are actually hungry or just bored/tempted to eat through habit.

  1. Drink 500ml of cold water, wait 15 minutes and see if you are still hungry. Often, dehydration manifests itself as hunger. If you're still hungry, try tips 2 and/or 3.
  2. Drink a cup of tea – green or redbush (rooibos) – which should help to reduce those feelings of hunger
  3. Brush your teeth. Usually you don't want to eat when you have a fresh tasting mouth from the toothpaste
